Woodrow Wilson Guthrie alias Woody is a founding artist the history of music of the 20th
century, creator of modern folksong. It was the voice that bears his people. He will deeply inspired
all singers as Bob Dylan. Springsteen and a whole generation of artists. Woody was born on July
14, 1912 in Okemah (Oklahoma) and died October 3, 1967 in Queens, New York. He was a
musician and singer of the streets. At the age of nineteen he then led a hobo existence which led
to Texas, where he formed the Corn Cob Trio, with whom he performed throughout and composed
his first song, Dusty Old Dust. Itinerant singer, in Los Angeles, he formed the duo Woody and
Lefty Loo and hosts a show at a local radio, where he evokes the American heartland. Progressive
folk singer, he performed in various events, meetings and strikes when his song resonate:
Pastures of Plenty .
His songs are marked by a commitment to disadvantaged classes. He became
famous in the forties and thirties because he wrote many protest songs (and poems) as Pastures
of Plenty written in 1941. Woody Guthrie describe the horrors and dignity of migrant workers in
North America because the Dust Bowl that hit the Great Plains in the United States and Canada in
the thirties. Pastures of Plenty is a ballad composed five stanzas based on the tune of "Pretty
Poly" a traditional folk song from the British Isles (Appalachia) .
