Introducing the theme 1.

Video The United States has long been considered a nation of immigrants. Migration started in the early 1600s with communities of Europeans settling around the Eastern seaboard. Stories of migration have been told over and over in novels, films, songs and works of art.

But how does migrating to the U.S.

build a new identity? What is it like leaving one’s home country and creating a new life somewhere else? Some migrants fled persecution in the hope of a new beginning.

They wanted to start over in the land of opportunity.

But living in a new country can be tough. Sometimes migrants feel like they’re still on the outside of society looking in. The newly-arrived tell of the challenges of shifting between two cultures: trying to integrate their new society without neglecting or rejecting their origins.

Yet, many migrants rise to the challenge and shake things up.

Walls are broken down, barriers demolished, as they build a new identity for themselves.

Follow the stories in “Migration: journeys to a new life”. TLLCE_Voyages, territoires, frontières_Axe3_U11_2023-2024 Page |2 Wednesday, March 27, 2024 B.

Document B: Ellis Island (The Corrs, 2016) a) Listen to the song and list the elements linked to immigration.

Explain the title. “Annie be my guide” ⇒ reference to Irish Annie Moore (1874-1924), first immigrant to the USA to go through federal immigrant inspection at Ellis Island in 1892. “Liberty’s a welcome” ⇒ Statue of Liberty. “Far away from home” ⇒ leaving one’s homeland. “Crossed the sea and ocean” ⇒ immigration coming from Europe. “To the land of hope” ⇒ The American Dream. “Six minute medical” ⇒ medical examination center of Ellis Island. “Leaving no chalk on me” ⇒ after a first inspection, when some immigrants needed to be checked more thoroughly, their clothes were marked by a piece of chalk. “Goodbye Ellis Island, hello land of free” ⇒ no health issues - immigrants allowed to enter the country. “Sing we will belong” ⇒ immigrants’ will to adapt and belong to the new country. “Sing of Ireland” ⇒ nostalgia for the homeland. “Thanking Ellis Island - Thank you, USA - You gave us a home here” ⇒ gratitude for the new country. “Wild Atlantic Ocean” ⇒ harsh journey across the ocean. b) Underline the significance of The Corrs being an Irish band. As many as 4.5 million Irish arrived in America between 1820 and 1930.

In the 1840s, they represented nearly half of all immigrants to the USA.

The Irish Potato Famine / The Great Famine (1845-1852) and its effect on the following decades increased Irish emigration.

Facing poverty and disease, the Irish set out for America where they hoped for a better life, reunited with relatives who had fled earlier on.

The Corrs share that journey to America as part of their history. c) Pick out expressions to show how the immigrants feel about their “new beginnings”. “We’ll grow up together / Far away from home” “Crossed the sea and ocean / To the land of hope” “You gotta keep your wits on you” “Goodbye Ellis Island, hello land of free” “Sing a song of hope / Sing for us together / Sing we’re not alone / Sing we’ll go back someday” “Sing we will belong / We will come together / Sing of Ireland” “Thanking Ellis Island / Thank you, USA / You gave us a home here / Crying a brand new day” d) Say what you think should appear in the video.
