To what extent can social media be a tool for the public to have their say in political
matters
For the past 15 to 20 years, social media has gained a substantial amount of value
and importance.
Not only does it connects billions of users from all around the world, it also
allows worldwide awareness.
Nowadays, more than 50% of the world population gets
breaking news from a social media platform.
The rapid and vast evolution and
adoption of these technologies is changing the world.
Social media brings new
opportunities for businesses with new partners or new ways to advocate a product or
even an idea, it also eases the access to information for instance.
Indeed, since the
resources of the world’s networks are limitless, the users have access to an infinite
amount of information.
So people from all around the world will be able to have
knowledge, meaning they will have more accurate arguments to support their ideas
or opinions.
Markus Aurelius once said: “the opinion of 10,000 men is of no value if
none of them know anything about the subject.” I do believe that this quote is highly
relevant here as, in order to be able to defend your ideas, you must be able to use
examples, proofs and relevant answers to oppositions on the subject so that you can
present accurate and undisputable arguments.
Furthermore, social media nowadays also allows every user to express
him/herself, thus it gives birth to the idea of change in politics.
Indeed, we consider
today the power of social media to be influence .
Social networking gives the social
movement a cheap and quick way to distribute information and to make people come
together.
Therefore, the people who use social media get empowered to change their
community and themselves.
They now have a voice that can be heard by countless
people and thus together, they can make change happen in a world where only the
majorities are heard.
