The Gothic
The gothic movement appear in the United Kingdom during the 18 th
century at
the time of the Victorian era.
The starting point was the emergence of an aesthetic value
assigned to the remains of medieval architecture, with its evocation of feeling serious,
dark, disturbing and mysterious.
Appears highly of ruined fortresses, castles abandoned,
old prisons, old monasteries, dark cathedrals and secret doors.
The appeal of the Gothic
takes the thrills it provides.
It is a pleasure when the threat becomes voluptuous and the
terror captivating.
The theme of double personality is also recurrent.
In fact, we can
question us to know what are the main features of a Gothic novel? And what it produces
on the reader? To begin with, we will discover different extracts: first, I will to present
you an extract of the novel Frankenstein and so, follow the way to the creation of a
monster; secondly, we will discover the theme of double personality through The
Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hide and finally I will present you a personal document
which illustrate this movement.
So, first, I’m going to present you Frankenstein .
This novel was write by Marie
Shelley in1818.
Marie Shelley makes full use of themes that were popular during the
time she wrote Frankenstein .
She is concerned with the know-ledge for good or evil
purposes, the invasion of technology into modern life, the treatment to the poor or
uneducated, and the restorative of nature in the face of unnatural events.
The
Frankenstein story tell the birth of a creature makes with died bodies.
In the extract,
Robert Watson, captain of a ship bound for North- Pole rescue Victor Frankenstein, who
has travelling by dog-drawn sledge across the ice and is weakened by the cold.
Watson
hears the fantastic tale of the monster that Frankenstein created.
Secondly, the novel Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Stevenson, is an example of
the double personality’ theme.
Indeed, Dr Jekyll explains that having realized of the
duality of man’s nature, containing both good and evil.
He decided to produce a chemical
composition to separate these two parts.
Upon tacking the drug, his body was under
great pain and when these symptoms passed, he examines the result of his work.
He felt
“younger, lighter and happier”.
Upon seeing himself in a mirror, he realized that he had
become Mr Hyde.
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde reflects the anxieties of Stevenson’s age : the
apprehension of technological progress.
My personal document is a song, composed by S.
Gainsbourg and singing by F.
Gall.
I thing that this song is a good example of the Gothic’ notion and imaginary’ theme.
The lyrics express that it was necessary to have a brain as large as that of Einstein to
create Frankenstein.
After, the song tell who Frankenstein had receive a criminal’ heart,
which is certainly the origin of his monster part.
The song wasn’t scary but she great
related the elements of the monster like the “set neck nerve connections”.
To conclude, we have seen that the gothic movement was born from the Victorian
h-era who ruled England for most of the 19 th
century.
The gothic relate mysterious
incidents, horrible images and life threating pursuits; which produce supernatural,
sensational and terrifying scenes.
Today, this theme and particularly the Frankenstein
story is still current.
Indeed it’s that we have seen with the song..
