The first Republic of the former USSR to declare its independence in
1990, Lithuania is a Baltic State.
The early days of independence were
marked by economic difficulties following from the divorce from the old
system which had long been integrated into the USSR.
Nonetheless the 1992 elections were won by the former Communist Party.
Sullied by these affairs, the government was brought down by the
parliament in February 1996.
The march towards a market economy has
meant a large fall in the standard of living of Lithuanians.
But
privatisation is now virtually complete.
There are still significant tensions with Russia, although Lithuania has
signed an association agreement with the European Union and wishes to
become part of NATO..
