The fall of the Berlin Wall on 9th November 1989 was one of the major
political events at the end of this century.
It was the end of opposition
between the "free" world and the "socialist" world which resulted from
the Second World War.
With the Iron Curtain dismantled, the reunification
of Germany became effective on 3rd October 1990.
The population of
Germany then increased by 18 million.
Germany is one of the founder States of the European Union.
From 1990 to
1994 integration of the new Länder of the East proved difficult because
of a considerable difference in the standard of living, uncompetitive
factories and high inflation in the East.
The German economic model, so
often held up as an example, has gone through major upheaval since 1995,
with a significant increase in unemployment, now affecting almost 4
million people..
