In antiquity and during the middle ages there is a substitute of what is
called a bra, but the real first modern bra appears much later.
• Antiquity: at the time of the Greeks and Romans women wore wide
strips of cloth draped around their bodies
• Middle Ages: We stop hiding women’s breasts and start highlighting
them
• 16th to 20th: It is the appearance of the corset that aims to tighten the
waist to bring out the hips and the chest.
They are made of wood and
metal.
But the corset has disadvantages because it causes health
problems
• Appearance of the first bra: on June 27, 1889 it is at the Universal
Exhibition of Paris that Hermine Cadolle presents a corset which is
separated into 2 parts.
It is only in 1914 created by the American
Mary Phelps Jacob that the first bra with cups appears
The Women’s Lib is an abbreviation for the Women’s Liberation
Movement in the United States.
Since the 1960s, women who join this movement have been protesting
against all forms of sexism and discrimination against them and
demanding real equality of rights with men.
This movement appeared in France in the 1970s.
In 1968, American women protested against the Miss America beauty
pageant in New Jersey.
At this demonstration there was the 'freedom trash can'' the idea was to
throw in this trash can symbolically the things that oppressed women
(whose bra).
It is also at this demonstration that the image of the woman who burns her
bra appeared because of a journalist but no fire has taken place, it is only a
myth.
Fifty years later, women’s rights are back at the forefront of U.S.
news,
with women’s marches and #MeToo making headlines.
The #MeToo movement is a social movement that encourages women to
speak out, to raise awareness about rape and sexual assault..
