« Axe : Living together / representation Problématique : how african american artists bring their culture to life through music? Plan:  Expressing pride  Conveying a political message 1.

Intro through the ages, african-americans have been and remain a discriminated community, particularly in the united states, where they have suffered violence and racism.

Art, which enables people to express themselves and spread a message to all, has been used in many ways to combat these inequalities. in my set of documents, there's a screenshot of lizzo's good as hell clip, then we have an article about jay'z and beyonce's apeshit clip, another screenshot of a clip, in this case jon batiste's call freedom, and finally an article about jon batiste's activism.

Let's take a look at how african american artists bring their culture to life through music? First, we'll see how they express their pride, and then how this spreads a political message. 2.

Expressing pride Firstly, we can take the example of the lizzo's 'good as hell' clip.

lizzo is an american singer and flutist from Detroit, who is very committed to many causes, such as lgbt rights.

In her "good as hell" clip, Lizzo once again puts her fame to work for a cause.

In her clip Good as Hell.

Lizzo shows us black women in a hairdresser 'ssalon.

Those which enter the salon have lost confidence in themselves because they can't manage to look after their beautiful hair, and Lizzo highlights the fact that this hair is see as difficult and ugly by the society She advocates self-acceptance.and for her where we come from or our apparences doesn't matter She's sending a message to all women ,especially black women, to take responsibility for themselves and have self-confidence, despite the many criticisms, here mainly about their hair.

It's a very topical message. Moreover beyonce and jay'z's apeshit video is a phenomenal turning point in the music world.

The clip had a major impact, as it took place in the Louvres museum in Paris.

It's a place where the public is mainly rich and white, and the artists on show are overwhelmingly Western.

.

They standin front of the most famous masterpieces, such as Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, where we see the 2 artists in pastel suits.

Somehow, they became the important portraits themselves, obliterating mona lisa in the process.

In another part of the clip, we also see Beyoncé in front of the Winged Victory of Samothrace, dancing in front of the statue and totally obliterating the work in order to be the center of attention and show that she's there and proud of it. Then As we read in the article, jazz has been and still is a way for black people to protest and celebrate black beauty.

Through his music, jon batiste is not only a talented man, but also a very committed one.

indeed, he doesn't hesitate to take to the streets of brooklyn, inviting hundreds of people to proudly spread the joy and values he holds dear through his music. Here we see a musician who is very proud of his Afrodescendant origins, and who also puts forward other artists such as saxophonists, drummers and pianists who share the same struggle as he does. In this frist part we have seen that these artists are not only talented , but also artist who do noy hesitate to highlit their African culture throught their various musical works.

But that’s not all they are , in fact in ther second part we’ll see that they are also committed artists who don’t hesitate to conveying a political message. 3.

Conveying a political message Through their various works, the artists evok continue the work that their ancestors began in the field of music such as harlem renaissance.

Take Jon Batiste, a talented musician who has won 5 Grammys and an Oscar for his score to the film Soul, but he's not just that: native of.... »
