Together, they launched Supertramp in 1969.

The name was found by guitarist Richard Palmer and comes from a book called Autobiography of a supertramp by W.

H.

Davies. The band started with four musicians: Rick Davies on the organ, piano, harmonica and vocals, Roger Hodgson on the guitar, bass and vocals, Richard Palmer on the guitar, Balalaika and vocals, and Robert Millar on the drums.

Their first album was published in 1970.

A second album was released in 1971 but the album does not sell and the band is dissolved. During the summer of 1972, a major search for replacements led to the recruitment of Dougie Thomson (bass), Bob Siebenberg (drums), and John Helliwell (saxophone, clarinet, and flute, occasionally keyboards and choirs) The completed band can then write a new album.

Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson start to write and compose independently. But Supertramp still had financial problems, and Roger Hodgson then considered giving up everything to go to India.

Dave Margereson, who works at A&M Records, is seduced by the band’s new models.

so decide to kind of support the band. In 1974, the group released Crime of the Century, which marked the beginning of the group’s success, both at the level of criticism and at the commercial level.

Although they write and compose separately, all songs are credited «Davies/Hodgson» .

They released their second album Even in the Quietest Moments in 1977.

But it was during the release of the album Breakfast in America that its success reached its peak.

The band then released the album Famous Last Words and soon after in 1983 Roger Hodgson left the band. In 1984, just a year after leaving Supertramp, Hodgson released his first solo album: In the eye of the storm.

The album is a great success. In October 1987, he released his second album: Hai! Hai! The record does not meet the expected success. In 1994, he wrote the song Walls with guitarist Trevor Rabin when he had to join the band Yes, replacing the singer Jon Anderson.

However, he reversed his decision and the project did not see the light of day. His third and last studio album, Open the Door, produced alongside Alan Simon, was released in 2000.

Supertramp’s sound is on it. Even now he continues to give regular concerts all over the world, solo or with his troupe of musicians.. »
