« Mt Rushmore Memorial is a monumental granit sculpture.

It is located in Black Hills of South Dakota near Keystone.

In nineteen twenty seven, Gutzen Borglum and 400 workers started to built the memorial which is 18 meters high faces of us presidents and it took 14 years to complete it.

The four presidents were: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln. The head of Washington was completed first, followed by Jefferson and Lincoln.

Roosevelt's head was unfinished when Borglum died.

The memorial was finished later that year by his son, Lincoln.

Borglum's original design was a sculpture of the four presidents to their waists, but he didn’t have time and money, so he just did the heads. This memorial became a symbol of optimism for the after war generation as it represents the greatness of America. Borglum created Mount Rushmore not only as a monument to depict the four men , but also the American ideals the four men represent. Borglum chose these specific presidents because they commemorate the founding, growth, preservation and development of the United States.

They symbolize the principles of liberty and freedom on which the nation was founded.

He said that the monument is “decidedly American in its conception, magnitude and meaning.

It is altogether worthy of our country” George Washington signifies the struggle for independence and the birth of the Republic; Thomas Jefferson represents the territorial expansion of the country; Abraham Lincoln stand for the permanent union of the States and equality for all citizens. Theodore Roosevelt exemplifies the 20th century role of the United States in world affairs and the industrial growth of the nation.. »
