Idea of progress
I’m going to speak about the notion “The idea of progress”.
The progress can be
defined as an improvement in the society in terms of technology, science, social progress.
So the idea of progress can be positive with advance but it can also be a degeneration due to
a negative progress.
We can see these two aspects through the sequence we studied: “Tech-
less world”.
We tried to answer the following questions:
-Can people live without technology?
-What can alternative visions of the future teach us?
To illustrate this notion and more specifically the idea of a world without technology I’m
going to present 3 documents.
Firstly we saw the film “Divergent” which shows us a vision of a world without
technology.
In this film, the society is divided in 5 small groups of people named factions
which are Abnegation, Amity, Candour, Dauntless and Erudite.
The first two live a simple
life without technology.
Whereas the other groups use technology.
Erudite use it for the
research and the progress of knowledge in the society.
So this idea of progress is positive
and could present a utopia which is an imaginary place where people are happy and politics,
lows and customs are respected.
Thanks to an improvement there is for example a peaceful
government, equality for citizens and access to education.
But in the other part, this films shows also a negative vision of technologies because
the government try to control people.
Dauntless’ leaders use microchips implanted in
people’s necks to control them.
And Erudite try to take the power thanks to technologies.
The other film we studied is Hunger Games, we saw two scenes.
In the first we can see,
Katniss, the main character of the film, hunting with rudimentary tools in the forest.
From
this life in nature appears an idea of freedom far from the control of the government.
But in
reality in this film the richest people have technologies.
As a consequence there is a huge
gap between the richest and the poorest characters.
This is one of the characteristics of a
dystopia.
So under this semblance of freedom hides a dystopia.
We can also see that in the
second scene we studied.
It shows the difference between the people from the district, like
Katniss, and the woman from Panem, which is part of the government.
The woman from the
government shows every year a film of propaganda to the poorest people.
It explains the.
