Bombay become Mumbai in 1995.
That year, the right-wing Hindu nationalist
party Shiv Sena won elections in the state of Maharashtra.
After the election, the
party announced that the city had been renamed after the Hindu goddess
Mumbadevi.
Federal agencies, local businesses, and newspapers were ordered
to adopt the change.
Shiv Sena's leadership pushed for the name change for many years before1995.
They argued that "Bombay" was a corrupted English version of "Mumbai" and an
unwanted legacy of British colonial rule.
Mumbai is located on Salsette Island .
Most of Mumbai is at sea level and the
average elevation goes from 10 to 15 metres.
Mumbai spans a total area of 468
The city is in a tropical zone near the Arabian Sea, so it does not have any
distinct seasons, but the climate can be classified into two seasons :the humid
one and the dry one.
The humid season is between March and October, it is
characterized by high humidity and temperatures.
The monsoon rains lash the
city between June and September .
Mumbai is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra.
It is the most
populous city in India, and the fourth most populated city in the world, with a
population of 20.5 million.
The seven islands that came to constitute Mumbai
were home to communities of fishing colonies.
Mumbai is a city that is very rich in cultural monuments.
If you go there, you
should definitely visit the Chor Bazaar, the museum of the Prince of Wales, and
Flora Fountain.
There are obviously plenty of other things to see, you will find
those places in any tourist guide.
Mumbai represents 25% of industrial activity in India, 40% of maritime trade and
contributes 5% of its GDP.
This is one of the 10 largest megacities in the world
that has a purse of global importance, the headquarters of many international
companies and ultra modern business centers from which have grown many
buildings, shopping centers, cinemas, etc..
On another hand, Mumbai is also apoor city.
Dharavi is a slum located in India, near Bombay.
In 2007 Dharavi was the largest slum in Asia,Composed of a complex network of
neighborhoods, businesses, schools, mosques and churches, this place is
coveted by developers.
But, as previous projects have failed leaving behind
"vertical slums", many people oppose the renovation.
In June 2007, the State of Maharashtra had an auction to turn it into an upscale
neighborhood..
