Malta is an archipelago of 3 overpopulated islands where the scarcity of
land and the cost of water are major problems.
In the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, 100 km from Sicily and 300 km
from Africa, Malta is of great strategic importance.
Although
independence was achieved in 1964, the British did not close their naval
base until 1979.
The economy is increasingly integrated with that of Europe and Malta
filed its application for membership of the EEC in 1990.
The European
Union is now its leading trading partner.
An original feature of the
economy is that the public sector employs almost 40% of the island's
active population.
Furthermore, unemployment is less than 4%.
The archipelago is noted for its dry Mediterranean climate with an
average annual temperature of 18°C.
Consequence: tourism and English
retirement villages are the island's main source of income..
