Make it right
More than 4,000 homes in New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward were destroyed by Hurricane
Katrina (which was the deadliest and most destructive Atlantic hurricane of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane
season).
Two years later, when actor Brad Pitt toured the city, the neighborhood was still deserted and
devastated.
Pitt promised the families he met there, that he would help make it right.
He founded Make
It Right in December 2007 to build 150 affordable, green storm resistant homes for families living in
the Lower 9th Ward when the storm hit.
As of May 2011, Make It Right had completed 75 homes and
has begun working on the second half of the project.
In addition to Brad Pitt, other celebrities are also involved with the Make It Right Project:
· Angelina Jolie
· Ellen DeGeneres
· Mike Holmes ( Holmes on Homes )
Make It Right’s goal is not only to build 150 new homes in the Lower 9 th
Ward, Make It Right is also
engaged in innovative efforts to repair and improve the infrastructure, the storm-preparedness and the
beauty of the community.
What is so special about a Make It Right home?
1.
Safety: the houses are built to weather the next storm.
2.
Healthy: Make It Right homes do not contain toxic materials and do not release harmful gases.
3.
Green: Make It Right homes are powered by solar energy and use geothermal heating and
cooling systems.
4.
Smart design: More than 20 acclaimed local, national and international architects have
contributed single family and duplex designs to Make It Right.
The Make It Right program is designed to help Lower 9th Ward residents become homeowners.
The
buyer is expected to contribute as much of their own resources as they can to cover the purchase price
of the home.
The average price of a single family home is $150,000; the average price of a duplex is
$200,000.
Prices vary based on home sizes and designs.
The average resident contribution to date has been $75,000.
Make It Right provides financing to cover
the gap.
It also offers financial products:
Soft seconds – loans with no payments and no interest that are forgiven over a period of time in
exchange for the homeowner’s commitment to remain in the home as an owner-occupant
Affordable mortgages – qualifying applicants who can afford monthly mortgage payments but do not
qualify for a mortgage from a private bank..
