James Cook was born October 27, 1728, a modest family of Marton (Yorkshire),
England.
He took his first steps as an apprentice seaman in the merchant navy, was initiated
for several years to navigation, mathematic s, astronomy and the rapidly rising levels
of the hierarchy.
Its future in the merchant navy is already decided, but Cook has other plans in mind:
the navy.
In 1755 he refused the proposal of command of the ship Friendship and enlisted as a
seaman in the Royal Navy (RN), while Britain was engaged in the Seven Years War.
James Cook part in the siege of Quebec City and used it to map the entire mouth of
the St.
Lawrence.
His talents were noticed by the Royal Society decided to entrust the care of a great
ex pedition in the South Pacific.
If the primary reason for this mission is the observation from the southern
hemisphere transit of Venus (Venus transit between Earth and the Sun), the main
issue for the British Crown is quite different: to discover the legendary Terra
Australia...
First expedition: 1768- 1771
This is on a robust three masts, the Endeavour, James Cook and a few scientists, set
sail August 25, 1768 to the distant waters of the South Pacific.
October 06, 1769, Cook landed in New Zealand and und ertook a detailed mapping of
its coasts.
Then making the route to Tasmania, strong winds diverted the expedition
further north, bringing it to a large land recently discovered and named New Holland
...
James Cook discovers the future Australie.L expedition resumed its course to the
Torres Strait separating Australia from New Guinea, then after a stopover in Jakarta
began its long journey back to Britain.
In June 1771, the Endeavour was retracted.
Second expedition :1772 -1775
With the new rank of Commander James Cook is entrusted by the Royal Society,
leading a second expedition aboard a new ship, the Resolution, accompanied by
Tobias Furneaux at the head of the second vessel Adventure.
They leave July 13,
1772.
This time, Cook goes down much further south.
But nothing ...
still no trace of the
mythical continent ...
it is beyond the Antarctic Circle, but the ice forced him always to
turn back.
Faced with these failures, he finally said the Terra Australis nonexistent.
It now begins the second part of his m ission: to go further north and sail in the warm
waters of the Pacific to expand scientific knowledge and make new discoveries on
behalf of the British Crown.
