It's A Man's Man's Man's World
by James Brown
Introduction / Presentation / Analysis :
The song was recorded on February 16, 1966, in New York.
It topped the US R&B chart for 2
weeks.
There is a reason why the late great musician James Brown is honored as the
‘Godfather of Soul.’
Indeed, the song was recorded as if it was a sermon with dramatic melody .
Brown’s song
makes broadly sketches towards pre-women's movement, in which men's responsibilities
consist of burly pursuits such as making trains to carry heavy loads and inventing electric
lights, before explaining that all of this achievement would be utterly worthless if it weren't for
the presence of ladies.
If you don’t listen to the song in its entirety or even the entire chorus
for that matter, one can easily jump into the conclusion that “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World”
is a song advocating male dominance.
Whilst the title of the song making debates about who
stand for it, James Brown completely flips the idea of the title of the song around.
The idea
behind the song is that no matter how many great things men have done and accomplished
throughout time, the man is nothing without his woman.
Relation with “Diversity and inclusion”:
This song is is directly linked with the axis “Diversity and inclusion” .
Indeed, like we said the
song looks like exclusion of the Women.
The women seems marginalized by James Brown at
the first look with the lyrics but it’s totally different.
It represents a kind of social advancement
for the women because of their role above men.
Without women, men would be nothing.
Period ! Then, James Brown’s song embody the diversity between women and men
especially with their inclusion in the society.
Their role and their attendance are vital for men’s
life.
James Brown initiate the acknowledgment of women in the 60’s society where “She” was
put behind “He”.
So for me, it’s a sort of involvement in the diversity of the whole community
and it fits with the inclusion of women’s role in the mentalities.
Why did I picked this document ?
What I have liked about this song is that while it is an indisputable fact that this is, indeed, a
man's world, it would mean nothing without a woman OR a girl.
In fact, I chose this document
because I always like to learn more about songs and their history.
Then, the way that James
Brown turns it like a provocation at the fist look, makes it interesting.
So, when you make
some research about the song, the lyrics and the real purpose of it, it makes it different.
At
that time, Women were still marginalized and the song participates in the esteem of women in
his society.
To be honest, that’s what I liked.
Furthermore, the way that the song open to put in
light women and forgot everything that men done if they wasn’t here, show a sort of respect
and tribute to her.
Which is, presumably, why they awarded women the vote..
