« It was with the "velvet revolution" of 1989 that Czechoslovakia put an end to the communist regime but the writer Vaclav Havel became Head of State and was then unable to withstand nationalist tensions.

On 1st January 1993 the Czechoslovak federation consisting of the Czech countries Bohemia and Moravia, and Slovakia, divided.

Two new independent republics were born. The country today continues its transition to capitalism.

It enjoys an extremely low unemployment rate and has formally applied for membership of the European Union.

This closer relationship with the EU is illustrated by the convertibility of the Crown since October 1995. The old industrial centres of Bohemia in the North, and Silesia are finding the changeover difficult and suffer from major problems of industrial pollution. Prague has become a major European tourist destination.. »
