Dear diary,
Today was a particular day! I started a new life!
That night I was not able to sleep because I couldn’t stop wondering about this new life, which frightened me a little.
The
United States, Los Angeles… it was all unknown for me.
But as I write, I am really excited about this new adventure and this new life.
This morning mama and papa woke us up very early and told us we were leaving Juarez to live in Los Angeles because papa
had found a job, thanks to a friend already settled there, and that it would allow us to have a better life.
They already had
prepared everything for the great departure, and I was rather anxious in opposition to my brothers who were quite excited.
So
we left by car for a long trip , minutes seemed hours.
Gradually, the landscape was changing.
The Mexican desert was fading
away and the city was emerging; cactus disappeared to leave room for buildings.
Suddenly, the car stopped; we had arrived in a kind of toll where border police officers checked papers, documents, visas…
My parents looked at them, worried.
I immediately thought we were illegal immigrants.
An officer arrived and papa handed
him documents shaking (I feared they were fake papers but papa said nothing to us on this subject).
The officer looked
carefully at the documents and searched the car.
During all this time, I held my breath.
The man stared at us and said: “it’s all
good”.
We were relieved.
Then, as we waited in the car, papa entered into a big building to exchange our pesos for dollars (that did not take long as he
didn’t have much!).
After that, we drove across the city to go to visit our new apartment.
So, as we crossed Los Angeles, I
could have a look at my future environment.
I was so impressed by the big shop showcases, the stores, the big buildings, the
large motorways, the traffic… (Waow! The real life began!).
We also drove past my new school where I could already
imagine myself (mama told me that I could go there next week; I was so excited!).
Finally , papa said: “ This is our block!”.
My brothers and I stuck our heads through the car window: It was an attractive small building.
We rushed inside, on the
second floor and opened the door.
We all chose our room in cheerfulness.
It was not luxurious but I feel good here now and I already feel at home even if I will always miss Mexico.
Now, I am eager
to find out what awaits me!!!.
