In 1989, the Rumanian revolution ended in the execution of the Head of
State and of the Party, Nicolas Ceausescu.
This period marks the end of
the dictatorship.
The National Security Front took power and was reelected in 1992.
Minorities are 20 % of the population, half are Hungarians in
Transylvania but there are also Gypsies and Germans.
Romania enjoyed slight growth in 1994, while inflation was curbed and
exports made strong progress.
But this growth has not had any impact on
the population and the privatisation of the economy is encountering some
problems.
Rumania is one of the poorest countries in Europe.
