George Orwell
George Orwell (1903-1950) is an English author.
He is considered as one
of the best chronicler from English literature.
He works for the Indian
imperial police but as he is disappointed from British imperialism, he
resigns from his position.
He decides to open a shop in France and begins
to write.
His first book, published in 1933, is "Down and Out in Paris and
London”.
He is against British imperialism, totalitarian regime and for
social justice and socialism.
In 1945, he publishes «Animal Farm».
This book deals with the Russian
communist revolution.
It is a big success.
In "Nineteen Eighty-Four", out in 1949, he speaks about the risks of
totalitarian regime in the future.
This book raises great interest.
1984 is published in 1949.
It is a science fiction novel.
It describes
England thirty years after a nuclear war between the Est and the West
which happened in the 1950’s where is now a totalitarian government
inspired from Stalinism and Nazism.
Freedom of speech and thought no
longer exist.
Every thought is watched, and huge posters are stuck up all
over walls saying “Big Brother is watching you”.
Ingsoc (English socialist
party) has the power.
Winston Smith, 39, a Londoner, works at the Truth Ministry.
During the
Two Minutes Hate, Winston meets Julia.
He first thinks that she is a spy
from the Thought Police and wants to kill her but he then changes his
mind after realizing that she is in love with him.
Big brother : The expression « Big Brother » is used to indicate the
institutions and practices which prejudice to the fundamental freedoms
and privacy.
