"Elephant Man" is a 1980 film directed by David Lynch, based on the life of John Merrick, a
19th-century British man with severe physical deformities.
The theme of "freaks"
(individuals with unusual physical characteristics or skills) is central to this film and explores
the way society perceives and treats those who are different.
The main character, John Merrick, is often nicknamed "Elephant Man" due to his extreme
physical deformities.
His life is marked by cruelty and the incomprehension of others due to
his singular appearance.
The film highlights how Victorian society viewed people with physical
deformities like monsters, often excluding and exploiting them.
The director uses striking visual elements to highlight Merrick's uniqueness and express how
society perceives him.
The circus scenes, where Merrick parades like a fairground attraction,
showing the exploitation to which these different people were subjected.
In the film, we also witness an assault scene with John Merrick as the victim and as the
aggressor of many men..
Indeed, he is hit, pushed, forced to kiss two women, he is also
mocked and his apartment is ransacked./ This shows that John is not only the victim of
constant judgment, he is also the victim of physical assault.
"Elephant Man" is also beaten by
his master who considers John a show beast, this can be considered slavery since it can be
assumed that he makes money by exhibiting him.
However, despite Merrick's physical appearances, the film seeks to show his interior nature,
his sensitivity and his deep humanity.
Doctor Frederick Treves, who takes charge of Merrick,
plays a crucial role in revealing the true personality of this "elephant man".
The film
encourages audiences to go beyond physical appearances to discover the interior beauty of
the individual.
Finally, the theme of "monsters" in "Elephant Man" calls into question the nature of
monstrosity.
The film highlights the need for compassion, understanding and tolerance
towards those who are different, while criticizing society's quick and cruel judgments of
society who do not meet established norms.
Throughout the film John is judged and considered as an animal even though he is a human
who walks, speaks (even if he sometimes has difficulty expressing himself), has emotions and
feelings but with a important important physics.
