Jake's Tower by Elizabeth Laird
Jake's Tower is an emotional, intriguing and heartrending story about a
young 12 year old school boy who is being abused violently by his step father
Steve. It was heart breaking to read about a helpless boy being beaten up by
someone twice his size.
Elizabeth Laird has captured every moment of the
book and described them with such feeling and intensity that I could picture
every scene in my head.
The story is set in modern times. Young Jake lives in a small dirty flat with
his mum Marie and step dad Steve. When his abuse starts to ruin his life all
he can do is run to his secret place.
Nothing fancy, just a sort of cave type
thing by a train embankment, but it was his place, where he can go and think
clearly or even cry if he has to. Through the story we learn that he has never
met his dad. Late at night or early in the mornings, he would run to his secret
place and think of his future. He liked to think big, so he decided to imagine
himself inside a huge tower surrounded by football fields where his dad would
teach him to play.
His mum, Marie, was heavily pregnant when they were
living with her new boyfriend, who did not just knock Jake about but also her.
