Those who challenge the existence of the glass ceiling claim that women themselves are to be
held responsible for the situation because they focus more on family than on career and because
they lack ambition.
what do you think about it? In your opinion, why do so few women hold top
position?
The question is not why so few women hold top position, the question is, is our
society is actually able to open its doors to women? Women have always been
dominated by men.
Nowadays, to assert themselves, women try to imitate
working men.
The work seems to be the best way for women to ensure their
independence, mainly financial.
So whose fault is it? Women who do not have enough ambition, education
which usually want a woman to be erased or do we really live in a men's world?
Historically, women have begun to assert themselves in the working world in
the forties, thanks to the industry of war which forced women to work in
factories whereas men were at war.
Even if the number of women accessing leadership position is increasing, there
are still limits which slow down the process of feminization of work.
The world of business is one of the sectors discriminatory where the first slogan
of companies is the concept of competitiveness and profitability that's why
companies have difficulty to hire women and especially women who have a
maternity project because it can be estimate as a danger for the company
because they distract their professional project for the benefit of their personal
life because for example because of mood changes related to pregnancy.
So it
seems that for a woman conciliating career and family life is difficult because
the business requires making sacrifices.
Also, women sometimes set limits on themselves.
They are aware of the
difficulty to impose themselves so for fear of failure, some women restrict their
desires and their ambitions.
Finally, that is difficult to find a guilty because everybody is responsible and
even if mentalities evolve there is still work to reach a full equality between
women and men in the working world.
