Dick Butkus, born in 1942, American football player, one of the greatest linebackers in American football history. Butkus was born Richard Marvin Butkus in Chicago,
Illinois. He enrolled at the University of Illinois, where he became a star center and linebacker. Standing 6 ft 3 in (1.9 m) tall and weighing about 245 lb (111 kg),
Butkus was particularly effective at stopping opponents' running attacks.
Butkus was selected by the Chicago Bears of the National Football League in the first round of the 1965 college player draft and quickly won a spot as starting middle
linebacker. He established himself as a talented all-around defensive player, known for his aggressive style of play and his fierce competitiveness. Butkus played nine
consecutive seasons for Chicago and was elected to the Pro Bowl eight times (1966-1973). A knee injury led to his retirement after the 1973 season. He was elected to
the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979. After retiring, Butkus worked as a football broadcaster on radio and television and as a motion-picture and television actor.
