Ceto (Whale) Greek An ancient Greek sea goddess.
Ceto was a daughter of Gaia and Pontus, the
earliest personification of the sea. Some scholars suggest
that the Greeks considered Ceto a sea monster
or a whale.
She is most famous for her monstrous children.
With Phorcys, one of her many brothers, Ceto
conceived and gave birth to the gorgons, three
female monsters, of whom Stheno and Euryale were
immortal and Medusa became mortal; the three sisters
known as the Graea, who represented old age; and
Ladon, the dragon who guarded the apples of the
Hesperides.
As one of the many original children of Gaia,
Ceto was also sister and aunt to many ancient
mythical creatures, including Thaumus, father of
the Harpies, and Nereus, father of the Nereids, or
Nymphs of the sea.
