Banksy, Beach Boys
The work we have chosen is the one that is called beach boys, a work which
denounce the israelo-palestinian conflict and which was made in 2005.
First, we are going to describe it, then, we will analyse it, and to finish, we are
going to give you our opinion about it and compare with others artworks.
So, let's start with the description of this work.
A hole in the cracked wall gives to see
a landscape of dream representing a paradisiac beach in trompe-l'oeil: palms and
coconuts, white sand, turquoise water ...
Underneath, two children in black and white,
positioned behind the fence barbed wire, play sandcastles with a yellow bucket.
One
of them seems to be examining passersby.
They have smiling faces (the one on the
right), which do not express fear.
They are naked torso, which refers to the poverty of
the Palestinians in general and the heat of the climate.
The lack of color (black and
white) gives them a ghostly appearance and contrasts with the landscape.
Beach Boys
is an in situ work, that is, it has been executed in relation to a specific place to play an
active role.
Painted elsewhere, it would lose all meaning.
It is also an ephemeral work
of art: Exposed in the street, unprotected, the works of Banksy have a very limited
lifespan (bad weather, bad degradations, censorship).
Photography allows you to keep
a record of the work before it is damaged.
Now, about the analyze, Playing chidren symbolize innocence, carelessness but
also the hope and future of the nation.
They seem to dream here on the other
side of the wall like an eldorado, as if they hoped to cross this wall.
We can also
think that the artist denounces this confilct that lasts since 1948.
Opposing a sad
reality, the poor children of the West Bank, in black and white with the gostly
aspect, and a utopian image with brings colours, the landscape.
This landscape
reflects in some way the feeling of people contained outside the wall is not hell,
it's not populated by enemies, and that a reconciliation between the two peoples
would open a future of peace to the taste of paradise.
In fact, Banksy offers us a
game of contrasts between reality and artistic representation : on one side the
reality of the wall with barbed wire, on the other side, the painting of unrealism
of the image with colors and black and white.
/// The project "Santa's Ghetto" is
a message of hope dedicated to the civil populations.
The works, although
provocative are not directly subject to controversy because non-violent and
hymn to peace, forcing the passer-by to question the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
These two works in situ offer a look at the confrontation between creation and
reality.
To the oppression that this wall symbolizes, Banksy responds with
creativity, poetry and hope.
But he does not take sides and condemn neither
Israelis nor Palestinians in particular.
He simply condemns the stupidity of war.
To finish, about our opinion, we find that by this work, Banksy manages to convey a
very clear and pacifist message, and even if his work doesn't allow to modify the
critical situation of the country, it allows even four to protest against these social
problems and fight them pacifist, which in the course of world history is proving to
be the wisest way to change things.
We also think that Art has the possibility to unite.
