Can American learn to love Misshapen Veggies ?
This text is an article of the Atlantic, written by Elizabeth Segran, in which Doug Rauch, the former
president of the Trader Joe's Company explains to us the problem , in America ,of food waste.
On the one hand, 1 percent of American own 40 percent of the nation's wealth. On the other hand, many
people haven't enough to feed themselves adequatly. So, Doug Rauch have thought about that and have
finelly found solutions. But what are theses solutions ? Of what does consist the wasting to which the text
refers?
I CONTRAST BETWEEN WEALTY PEOPLE AND UNDERPRIVILEGIED PEOPLE
In America, there is a very big gap between people who earns lot of money (who are minotity ) and people
who earns not enough to feed themselves.
let us explain more in details this existing lag (décalage) between the two categories.
One the one hand, Wealthy constomers expect perfect food production. They are ready to pay more to have the better production of the world. But these people are too difficult and it entails a very big problem as the text shows to us. Actually, it has for consequence a lot of food waste because if fruit and vegetables are not perfect, they are discarded. The USDA estimated that 31 percent of food produced in America goes uneaten every year. What is enormous. All the more, when we see that one in six Americans is going hungry. There is this paradoxe. So, What do we do about it ? II SOLUTIONS WHICH ARE TAKEN In front of this inefficienty in America's food system, he has imagined a grocer store in which, discarded food is salved and sold to a very low cost to consuers who have not the funds to feed themselves. This Daily Table provided to open in fall in Roxbury, a low income Boston suburb. If this project succeed, Rauch plans to open other stores around the country. But nevertheless, he has some difficulties overcoming like legal restrictions against selling of expired produce or competition if we can say that, in others country where grocery stores are scarce and where food is sold at twice the price. CCL : So, on the one hand, some difficulties must be overcome and if this project meet difficulties, nothing will be probably achived (r éalis é). But on the other hand, this project is (obviously (certes) a very good thing insofar (dans la mesure o ù) it allow (permettre) poor people to eat correctly and it avoids wasting. This is , I thing, really a project which must be taken serriously because finelly it concern everybody obviously not in the same proportion, but it is a very good idea in these country where on the one hand some people are privileged (favoris ées) and on the other hand, a lot of people are hungry. . »
