This document is a cartoon by David Camerow.
We can see a couple who is sitting in the agency of the
marriage counselor, in front of his desk.
The woman looks like upset and disappointed and the man
seems be lost, he wearing a hat, a pants with the colors of America and a t shirt which is marked
“American dream”.
He seems dirty because his clothes are worn and too short for him as we can see
his navel; he is very big, he has got a long beard and he seems be overlook with his appearance so he
is not very attractive that’s why I think that this document is a caricature of the American dream, it
conveys a negative image of the American dream.
In the picture I notice that the man takes lot of
space.
Maybe this couple is here because they have a marital problem and advices of the counselor
will help them.
Thus in this cartoon the man might be represented the American dream who means that
America is a place where you can fulfill your dream so without degree, without a penny you can
success.
In other word you can start from scratch and climb up social ladder to reach riches.
In this
way I can suppose that the woman represents the people who don’t believe any more in this American
dream especially the immigrant.
That’s why the man say ‘’ what do you mean you’re no longer
attracted to me? ‘’, as the woman represent immigrant it may mean that they are not attracted any
more by the American dream, and there is a conflicts between them, people know that the American
dream is just a myth and today if you want to success you must have diploma and money you can’t
just have your motivation and determination because is not enough.
We can imagine that she looks
disappointed because she represents the feelings of the immigrants who were full of hope and when
they set foot in America all these hopes have gone since the dream is an illusion.
To sum up this
picture illustrates the fact that this dream is dead today and shows us that people are not longer
attracted by the American dream as in the past..
