A member of the European Union, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is one of
the Union's six founder countries.
Today it is host to several European
institutions.
Attracted by jobs in international institutions and big
companies, foreign workers make up almost a quarter of the population.
Financial and banking activities are important since, benefiting from
considerable tax advantages numerous foreign companies have established
their head offices there.
The first European commercial radio station, Radio-Luxembourg, began
transmission in 1934 from Luxembourg.
