A former Soviet Republic, Moldavia achieved a difficult independence in
1991.
Numerous separatist attempts have marked recent years: against
Moldavian nationalists who demanded the reunification of the country with
Rumania, the Slavs of the East of the Dnepr, primarily Russians and
Ukrainians, declared their independence; the Gagaouzes did the same and a
civil war ensued in 1992.
An agreement for the non-partition of the State
was signed at the end of 1992 and Moldavia joined the CIS in 1993.
A new
constitution has been proposed with more autonomy for the Gagauzi- and
Russian-speakers of Transdniestrie but they refuse to yield over the
sovereign status of their region.
In late 1995 they voted for a new
independent constitution..
